September 8, 2026

The holiday pays tribute to the contributions and achievements of American workers and is observed each year on the first Monday of September. It was created by the labor movement in the late 19th century and became a federal holiday in 1894. Labor Day weekend also symbolizes the end of summer for many Americans and is celebrated with parties, cookouts, parades and athletic events.

BELL TO BELL

L Lining up at door message for staff:

Students are beginning to line up at doors with several minutes still left in the class period.  Please keep students busy until the end of each period.

It is important to maximize class time and set a tone for high expectations no matter the circumstances.  Additionally, the rate of behavioral issues that happen while students are lining up at the door is significantly higher than any other time in the classroom.

Make sure you are developing strong routines to assist in managing the end of the class (clean up routines, exit tickets, check out processes…) and staying consistent in your expectations from start to finish in the classroom.

Grading Guidance for Missing Work:

  • If you grade an assignment and a student has not done the assignment, put in a 1 for the grade. Do not use NG as a place holder.
    • The 1 indicates that the student did not show evidence of learning.  Since they did not do the assignment, they did not show evidence of learning.
    • For students with chronic absences with a bunch of missing assignments, put 1s for those.  This will accurately reflect the students progress and reiterate the importance of being at school.
    • The grade can change once the kid completes the assignment.  Be consistent marking 1s so students will know to make up the assignment.
    • Missing work vs. Grade work that is actually a 1:
      • If an assignment is missing, put a 1, but also use the comment dropdown to mark that it is missing.
      • If a student did the work but got a 1, just mark it as a 1.
  • Students are allowed to make up work for verified absences (Illness, School Activities, Appointments, etc…
    • Students are expected to complete make-up work within a period equal to the number of days absent, unless another timeline is approved by the teacher or school. (for example: 2 days absent = 2 days to make up work
    • Another example would be: if you give a quiz on Tuesday and a student misses that day, they should be expected to do the quiz the day they return.
  • Unverified absences are things like no call in (UNV) or unexcused absences (UNE) like “i’m taking my 7th vacation day”.  Whether a student can make up missing work from Unexcused and Unverified Absences will be up to the discretion of the teacher.
  • At the end of the quarter, no make up work from that previous quarter will be accepted.  The quarter will represent the hard deadline for all tasks/work up to that point regardless of day for day make up.  Teachers will plan with students and parents accordingly.

  • Please Review the document.
  • CONSISTENCY is the KEY! Please ensure you are following the procedures. Thank You!

Do you have a SHOUT OUT for a fellow colleague?

From Kristin: Alex Bedatsky: Alex always provides student feedback for IEP meetings that is detailed and shows how well he gets to know his students. He is able to identify strengths, as well as skills that the student still needs to continue to develop. His feedback reflects the interest he takes in getting to know his students.

From Cannon:  Quick shout out to my hallway neighbors for being amazing while I was at Camp Colton! Dr. Franklin worked with 11 of my students on her prep time to help out, and Mrs. Canuas covered ALL of my duties for the week. Thank you guys for being so kind!

From Anonymous:  Thank you to Jacquie who is tech help, sub plans help, duty help, coverage help, on top of being an awesome mom at home. Couldn't have done this last week without her!

From Kristin: To all the staff that went above and beyond to help support our ESS Students at Camp Colton!  Staff members stepped up to drive the students to and from camp, and others stayed to support them at camp!
