NAVVY:
As some of you may know, ADE has partnered with Pearson to create a new benchmarking tool (NAVVY) that fully aligns with the AASA assessment. This tool launches this school year and will provide strong predictive data on how students may perform on the AASA in April.
Grade levels 3–8 are required to administer one benchmark per grade level as dictated by ADE. For middle schools, the required NAVVY assessments this year are:
  • Math: Grades 6 and 7
  • ELA: Grade 8
Initially, ADE communicated that the November benchmark window was optional for federally targeted schools (TSI). MEMS is a TSI school for Special Education. However, we were informed today that we must administer the NAVVY benchmark in November to at least one grade level due to our TSI status.
Unfortunately, the testing window closes on November 30, and we do not have school during the last week of November. This leaves us with only one week to administer the assessment. Additionally, we feel it is more beneficial to test all grade levels, not just one, so we can obtain two data points leading into the AASA.
Please note that the required testing block for NAVVY is 90 minutes.
  1. NAVVY Testing Schedule, Friday, Nov. 21st:

To accommodate the testing schedule, we will have a combined lunch schedule.  We will communicate lunch plans to our regular duty staff about how we will conduct lunch.

This is the time of year I like to remind everyone about some key fire marshal safety points. I have a brief checklist below for reference that I’d like added to the blog so they can review it.

Fire Marshall CheckList

We have been hearing a rumor that, due to declining enrollment, there will be a Reduction in Force (RIF) in FUSD. This is false.

FUSD has experienced declining enrollment for at least five years. During that time, the district has strategically managed staffing by making small reductions each year to avoid the need for a RIF. For example, last year at MEMS, we reduced 2.5 teaching positions and 0.5 administrative position through attrition and retirements. This has been the consistent approach FUSD has taken over the years.

Please know that Lawrence and I work very hard to weigh all options and make decisions that are in the best interest of our students and staff.

Thank you for your continued dedication and support.

We are still need of a paid morning duty person-8:30-8:50.  Please contact Morgan.

Congratulation to Scott Godwin!  He presented on November 8 at the NAU at the Dine Showcase!

RESULTS of ADE ELL audit in FUSD.

MEMS was not mentioned in any area needing improvement and was highlighted as an example of moving our program forward.
Congratulations to all of you! Thank you for being exemplary leaders for the ELL department and the district.
